The essentials
Bottom line: Descript can still be useful as a hands-on editor and production workspace, but the Free plan is a limited demonstration of the AI-first workflow rather than a dependable way to generate a complete video automatically.

Audience fit
Descript combines a transcript editor with a multitrack timeline, screen and webcam recording, captions, AI audio cleanup, generated media, AI speech, collaboration, and export. The core idea remains distinctive: spoken content becomes text, and deleting or rearranging that text changes the underlying media. For dialogue-heavy work, that can make rough-cut editing feel closer to revising a document than operating a traditional nonlinear editor.
AI Video Maker extends that model from editing into generation. Descript says it can take a prompt, script, or existing footage and return an editable project with narration, visuals, and an optional avatar. On current plans, the feature uses AI credits. The official credit guide also explains that Underlord can consume credits for both the agent's reasoning and the tool it runs, so apparently simple requests do not always have a fixed cost.
Independent feedback is sharply split. G2 and Capterra both displayed 4.6/5 at our check, while Trustpilot displayed 2.8/5. Those aggregates should not be averaged because the platforms use different review populations and collection methods. The repeated positive theme is clearer than the scores: users value transcript-based editing, fast transcription, filler-word removal, captions, and the time saved when producing podcasts, training videos, and social content.
The repeated criticism is equally consistent across G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, TrustRadius, and Reddit discussions. Users describe lag, crashes, lost-edit concerns, and AI credits that disappear faster than expected. Several also say the AI-led workflow can feel less predictable than direct manual editing. Our short test did not reproduce crashes or lost work, and we did not test support or billing. It did reproduce the credit-access problem in a concrete form: the proposed job exceeded the entire Free allocation before it began.
Our finding: the account showed 100 AI credits and AI Video Maker recommended at least 143 for the controlled script. We did not have enough credits to press forward with the automated generation. This was useful transparency - the shortfall appeared before the run - but it also means a new Free user may be unable to test the headline workflow with a modest prompt. We did not buy a top-up or plan, so the review does not claim how much the completed job would ultimately have consumed.
We moved into the editor and built the project manually. That fallback matters because Descript did not become unusable when the AI-first route stopped. The project could still combine a script, an AI Speaker, a generated visual, animation, and export. The process required more direct decisions than the promised first-draft generator, yet it demonstrated that the underlying editor offers practical control rather than functioning only as a prompt box.
Bradley passed the factual pronunciation test. The voice correctly read the dollar amount as $249.99 and spoke September 3, 2026 without dropping or rearranging the number components. Accuracy was not the problem. The tone was extremely deep and metallic, with a pronounced synthetic quality that made the delivery sound robotic and slightly frightening. It may suit a deliberately dramatic character, but it was a poor match for a neutral product-review script.
Nano Banana produced a convincing photorealistic image from our prompt. Descript's official model guide identifies Nano Banana as a Google DeepMind image model intended to balance speed and quality across complex prompts and editing tasks. Our result supports the image-quality part of that positioning, but only for one generation. We then applied Zoom and pan. In the exported project, the movement was visible for roughly the first 10 seconds and did not continue across the full composition. We record that as project behavior, not a universal product limit.
The local MP4 export completed successfully without payment. The available result was 720p and carried a Descript watermark. That matches the current official plan comparison: Free local export is 720p, Hobbyist moves to 1080p, and Creator and Business support 4K. Watermark-free export begins on Hobbyist.
Free plan; Hobbyist $24/month or $16/month billed annually
Pricing was rechecked on September 13, 2026 on Descript's official US page. Free remains $0 with 100 one-time AI credits. Hobbyist remains $24 monthly or $16 per person per month billed annually, Creator $35 or $24, and Business $65 or $50. Enterprise access remains custom. The lower paid figures require annual billing.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual equivalent | AI credits | Selected limits/inclusions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 100 one-time | 1 media hr/mo; 720p local export; watermark |
| Hobbyist | $24 | $16/person/mo | 400/mo | 10 media hrs/mo; 1080p; watermark-free |
| Creator | $35 | $24/person/mo | 800/mo | 30 media hrs/mo; 4K; generated video access |
| Business | $65 | $50/person/mo | 1,500/mo | 40 media hrs/mo; 4K; Brand Studio; priority support |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom allowances, security, legal terms, and support |
The Free allocation is especially important: 100 AI credits are granted one time, while paid allowances renew monthly. Descript says unused credits do not roll over. It also warns that generative-media costs depend on model choice and that Underlord may add agent-reasoning cost on top of a tool action. In practical terms, buyers should review the estimate before every large generation and avoid treating a plan's headline credit number as a predictable number of finished videos.
Value judgment: Hobbyist is the first realistic tier for watermark-free 1080p work, but Creator is the tier that explicitly adds current generated-video access and 4K export. The right plan therefore depends less on transcription alone than on how often a creator uses AI media, retries voices or visuals, and needs high-resolution delivery. Enterprise pricing remains custom.

The session divided Descript into two products. The AI-first product looked promising but was inaccessible at the requested scope because the Free allowance covered less than the recommended minimum. The manual editor was more useful. It let us assemble a coherent project, generate a strong still image, add narration and motion, and reach a downloadable result. That is why the failed automated start does not turn the review into a simple rejection.
Quality was uneven. The spoken content was accurate, yet the voice itself was the weakest major output element. The image was visually convincing, yet the applied motion covered only part of the composition. Export was reliable, yet the 720p watermark limits public use. Descript deserves credit for allowing a finished Free result, but the experience also showed why every AI element needs to be previewed and why the credit estimate should be treated as a production constraint.
These exclusions keep the conclusion narrow. The rating describes the tested Free-plan short-video workflow, not Descript's full value as a mature podcast editor or paid team platform.
| Alternative | Choose it for | Trade-off versus Descript | Exploripo take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pictory | Guided script-to-stock-video assembly | Less capable as a transcript-first editor | Better tested choice when the goal is an automatic first draft |
| InVideo AI | Agent-led ideation and model access | Free credits can also end before completion | More ambitious automation, but less predictable free value |
| Synthesia | Polished avatar-led business video | Presenter-centric and paid export | Stronger voice and avatar polish for structured explainers |
| Premiere Pro / DaVinci Resolve | Frame-level editing and advanced post-production | Longer learning curve and less one-click AI help | Better for control, reliability, color, and complex timelines |

Descript remains an interesting editor because its transcript-first workflow lowers the barrier to editing spoken media. In our test, the manual tools were capable enough to turn a controlled script into a finished, downloadable video. The price and date were narrated correctly, Nano Banana produced a strong photorealistic visual, and Free export worked. Those are meaningful successes.
The current Free experience did not fully demonstrate the product's AI promise. AI Video Maker wanted at least 143 credits while the account contained 100. Bradley's voice was accurate but conspicuously robotic, Zoom and pan stopped after roughly 10 seconds in our project, and the final file was limited to watermarked 720p. Descript is therefore easier to recommend as a hands-on transcript and media editor than as a one-click Free AI video generator.
Exploripo rating: 6.5/10
Recommended for: dialogue-led creators who value transcript editing and are willing to review AI output manually. Less suitable for: Free users expecting automatic video generation, natural stock narration, full-length motion, or watermark-free high-resolution delivery.
